Every week the centres distribute between 2,500 and 3,000 food parcels and boxes to individuals and families. Each bag contains enough food for several days, either for one person or a family. In total more than 150,000 food parcels have been delivered, helping hundreds of people who otherwise would be struggling to feed themselves. Feedo Needo also delivers food parcels to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham and West Midlands Ambulance Service.

Zahid has established partnerships with all the leading supermarkets including the likes of Tesco, Aldi, Morrisons, Asda, Lidl and other food retailers such as Greggs who supply good quality food to the foodbanks.

Zahid launched Feedo Needo after he found himself at one point wondering how he would pay to put food on the table for his family even though he was employed.

He realised that if he could struggle to pay bills as a professional person, there must be many thousands of other people barely getting by if they are in low-paid jobs. The situation would be worse for those out of work, or who had fallen on hard times.

Since 2015, Zahid has led Feedo Needo in a rapid expansion. It now operates with more than 50 volunteers who prepare the food parcels and organise their distribution, including mobile delivery by van to the house-bound.

Here is a timeline of how Feedo Needo has grown:

  • 2015 – Feedo Needo opens major centre in Birmingham. It now supports over 200 families and individuals with food parcels distributed twice a day.
  • 2016 – Manchester centre opens, helping more than 50 families with food distributed once a day.
  • 2017 – Feedo Needo opens in Ilford, East London, providing food parcels once a week for up to 50 people.
  • 2017 – Centre opens in Bradford, providing food parcels for individuals and families twice a day.

Another centre in London is currently being planned, and other centres are also in the pipeline.

In addition, the centre in Birmingham has expanded to provide free haircuts and hairdressing for homeless people and it has recently started a free 1-day hairdressing course for mothers to teach them a skill that could help them increase their income.

The volunteers are trained to give advice and support to the homeless people and others in need to help them on a path to independent lives.

However, it is worth highlighting a key difference between the Feedo Needo foodbanks and many others. People who are homeless or hungry do not have to get a referral to benefit from the Feedo Needo services. Zahid takes the view that if someone is so desperate that they approach the foodbank for help, then they must be in real need. Some of the people making use of the foodbank are mothers with young children whose husbands are working, but in low-paid jobs that barely cover the rent.

During the COVID lockdowns in 2020 and 2021, Feedo Needo was particularly effective and the number of people the foodbank supported grew to 50,000, including many isolating at home who receive van deliveries. Here is a link to local TV coverage in Birmingham in December 2021.
