• Since receiving his successful transplant, Zahid has kept in regular contact with the renal team who cared for him. In 2017, he made a generous donation of £2,500 after hearing that the team was planning a thank you party for over 100 kidney and dialysis patients and their families at Queen’s Hospital, Romford. This enabled the party to go ahead as a thank you to patients and the NHS team.
  • Zahid led the GKF in sponsoring a UK renal team to attend a major conference in Washington, USA, to share their development of an innovative advance in dialysis treatment. The advance is a self-care dialysis kit that empowers patients to be treated at home without having to make frequent and time-consuming trips to hospital.
  • The innovation is described in a letter of support by Senior Nurse Franel Ave, head of the Dialysis Unit at Queen’s Hospital in Romford, Essex. He tells how he and a colleague were able to share their innovation with over 12,000 kidney professionals from around the world at the American Society of Nephrology Kidney Week. Mr Ave says:

“We would not have been able to make the presentation without the support of Zahid, who financed our trip to the US. As a result, news of the innovative treatment was shared to the global kidney professional community. In the UK, so far three of our patients are using the home-care dialysis, transforming their lives.”

    innovation

In addition, the Global Kidney Foundation is having significant impact in encouraging more people to become organ donors and dispelling misconceptions about organ donation, particularly within Britain’s ethnic minority communities.

It is worth mentioning another project that Zahid supports. This is the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital (SKMCH) in Pakistan, which is also supported by the Imran Khan Cancer Appeal. Zahid Bhatti has organised events in Pakistan to raise funds for the hospital for over 15 years.
